My Plan for Better Reading This Year


As it's the start of a new year it's always a good time to think about how to improve. That goes for my reading habits too.

I've decided that this year I'm going to set myself some reading resolutions in the hopes that they help guide me to a more productive year.

Net Galley Ban

The struggle is real when it comes to Net Galley. It's super easy to get click happy and end up spiraling your TBR out of control.

Although I did the Net Galley TBR Reading Challenge at the end of 2021, which helped improve my ratio (currently 82%), my big goal is to get my TBR list down to zero. In fact, I'm doing the Net Galley TBR Reading Challenge again this year.

My resolution is to not request or add any new books to my TBR until I've cleared the whole of the backlog on there currently. 

Should I manage to be successful in keeping my resolution and in clearing my TBR list there 🤞 I'll be adding a second resolution to not have more than 3 books on my Net Galley TBR list at anyone time.

Daily Reading

Life has a habit of getting hectic and I can end up with weeks where I manage to get very little reading done. I'm hoping to make sure I make more steady progress with my reading by setting the resolution to read for at least 1 hour a day, every day. 

The hour doesn't need to be in the one block as that's sometimes just not possible. It therefore can be spread out throughout the day. Ten minutes here, thirty minutes there... who knows I might end up reading for more than an hour a day. One can hope.


Try New Genres

Thanks to the reading challenges I do I've ended up reading some books that I might not (almost definitely wouldn't have) picked up otherwise. 

As some of these books have turned out to be awesome reads I've decided I want to keep pushing my comfort zone and trying out more books that aren't in my usual genres. Don't get me wrong, I will of course still be loyal to my thriller and romance genres. I just want to add a few "different" reads into my year for more variety.

    I am ashamed to tell you my Netgalley ratio continues on a downward slide despite my constant reading - I am defo clickhappy!

      It's so easy to do DJ. A "quick look" at the books available is guaranteed to end in at a few more on my TBR.

    Good sound resolutions Jo. I know what you’re saying about Netgalley. I was determined to catch up last year and I did quite well. I’m down to four books on my shelf.

    I think I must be one of very few who hardly uses Netgalley. I probably take between 1-3 books at a time, read them and start again. I think it helps rarely checking the website though. My ratio has never gone below 95%.

    Reading though this year has really slowed. I've been reading one book since before Christmas managing just a couple of chapters a day (and the book is great too). Unlike me. Hoping to get my reading mojo back soon.

      And that's why that's the right way to use Net Galley. Definitely helps keep your ratio looking healthy. How you are using it is basically how I want to use it... I just get distracted by all the books and go click happy...

    Like DJ when it comes to Netgalley I have no control. I keep telling myself I am going to avoid it, then I get a widget in my inbox and there goes my resolve. The struggle is real.

    Good luck with the Net Galley challenge. I can sympathise with your difficulty since I too get carried away and become click happy. The only way to solve this for me is not to click on any of those emails they send out about the 'must have' books this month etc etc
